National Nutrition Month

Each March we recognize National Nutrition Month, the perfect opportunity to discuss the connection between well-fed children and successful students. It is also a great time to show appreciation to the professional food services staff within our own school district.

School meals are crucial for student health, well-being, and academic success, and may be of critical import for those from low-income households. They help students meet their nutritional needs, which in turns helps to reduce food insecurity, improve attendance, and hopefully lead to greater academic success. School breakfast and lunch programs can help students develop healthy eating habits which will benefit them throughout their lifetimes.  No child should go through the school day, or any day, with an empty belly and our local food service professionals provide meals on remote learning days as well. Studies have shown that well-fed children have better focus and fewer disciplinary issues.

Here in Massachusetts, our legislature passed a bill in 2023 to provide permanent free meals for all K-12 students in the breakfast and lunch programs throughout the state. When Governor Healey signed it she said, “By delivering universal free meals, this administration is making clear that nothing is more important than ensuring our kids are fed, healthy, and ready to learn and play and grow.”

The stated mission of our own Old Rochester Regional School District’s Food & Nutrition Services is, “To ensure that we not only serve healthy, well-balanced, and cost-effective meals but foods your children will want to eat.” Our kids benefit from having committed professionals dedicated to providing healthy meals that are nutritious, varied, and delicious. Extensive planning goes into each weekly menu, with efforts made to include a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein. Meal modifications are available for kids with food intolerances, allergies, and other dietary restrictions.

Let’s all be thankful for the hard work of the folks who provide our local students with the best nutritional options to help them on their lifelong journey to good health, positive relationships with food, and the best possible opportunities for success with a full belly and well-fed mind!
