Supporting Teachers & Staff

My decision to run for school committee was driven by a personal commitment to get more involved in our local community. I strongly support public school education as a societal necessity, as it readies students to become informed and engaged citizens of the future. A healthy school system should provide all students quality and accessible education, regardless of economic status. It should prepare them for the workforce and higher education, strengthening our community by ensuring social mobility and civic participation. In addition, I realize that the role of a school committee member should also provide support to both teachers and administrators. The strength of our schools is dependent upon the quality of our staff and we should recognize, back and elevate their contribution to our children’s education.

A school committee should focus on establishing clear policies and guidelines, provide adequate resources for learning (both inside and outside of the classroom,) commit to civil discourse and open communication, and advocate for support of all staff, including administrators, teachers, and paraprofessionals. As has been proven time and again, it does take a village to raise a child.

When developing and approving budgets to adequately address the needs of all students and staff, it is important to listen and be open to hearing many viewpoints. Active engagement with parents, teachers, administrators, and the community to gather feedback ensures a collaborative approach to decision-making. While we advocate for students needs, we should be just as diligent in adopting appropriate professional development for all staff, thereby ensuring they have the skills and knowledge to effectively serve students, while continuing their own growth as educators.

Fostering a positive and supportive school culture where all teachers, administrators and students feel valued and respected will ensure that tax dollars have been wisely appropriated and the communities of Mattapoisett, Marion and Rochester continue to thrive.
